Psalm 29

A psalm of David.

¹² Then the Spirit lifted me up,^(A) and I heard behind me a loud rumbling sound as the glory of the Lord rose from the place where it was standing.^{[a] 13} It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures^(B) brushing against each other and the sound of the wheels beside them, a loud rumbling sound.^{(C) 14} The Spirit^(D) then lifted me up^(E) and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the Lord^(F) on me. ¹⁵ I came to the exiles who lived at Tel Aviv near the Kebar River.^(G) And there, where they were living, I sat among them for seven days^(H)—deeply distressed.

Ezekiel’s Task as Watchman

¹⁶ At the end of seven days the word of the Lord came to me:^{(I) 17} “Son of man, I have made you a watchman^(J) for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.^{(K) 18} When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,^(L)’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for^[b] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.^{(M) 19} But if you do warn the wicked person and they do not turn^(N) from their wickedness^(O) or from their evil ways, they will die^(P) for their sin; but you will have saved yourself.^(Q)

²⁰ “Again, when a righteous person turns^(R) from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block^(S) before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.^{(T) 21} But if you do warn the righteous person not to sin and they do not sin, they will surely live because they took warning, and you will have saved yourself.^(U)”

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah^(A)(B)

¹⁸ Once when Jesus was praying^(C) in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

¹⁹ They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;^(D) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”^(E)

²⁰ “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”^(F)

Jesus Predicts His Death

²¹ Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.^{(G) 22} And he said, “The Son of Man^(H) must suffer many things^(I) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,^(J) and he must be killed^(K) and on the third day^(L) be raised to life.”^(M)

²³ Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.^{(N) 24} For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.^{(O) 25} What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? ²⁶ Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them^(P) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.^(Q)

²⁷ “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
